Henry Grueber
was born in 1743. He
died aged 66 in 1809 in Lewisham near London. He is buried in St Mary the
Virgin churchyard. He apparently was quite wealthy as he left fairly large
sums of money to his wife Ann, friends and son Stephen Henry. He seemed to
be very religious and also left bequests to the widows in the poorhouse
and the childrens orphanages. He was a merchant and as his brother
Nicholas, cousin Richard and later his son Stephen were all connected with
the British East India Company, it is fairly certain that is where his
wealth came from. His brother Nicholas lived in India for at least thirty
years. He also had a sister Elizabeth. His wife Ann outlived him by six
years. She died in 1815. Apparently there was only one child, Stephen
Henry.
