Stephen Henry
Grueber was born in 1818 in Brockley near London. He
married Elizabeth Millar in 1839 in Westminster, London and died aged 88
in 1906 in Fingal, Tasmania. He is buried in the Fingal New Anglican
Cemetery. He had seven children. After his father’s mill failed he paid
$100 to learn farming skills from John Wilson of Saffordshire. He and his
wife left England shortly after their marriage and arrived in Hobart on
the ship ‘Derwent’ in October 1839. He bought a property of 320 acres
in October 1841 and built a cottage, barn and a house. He called the
property ‘Brockley’ after his place of birth. He sold this in 1860 and
leased a property called ‘Rheban’. In 1870 he leased and later bought
‘Ormley’ at Fingal. He was appointed ‘Commissioner of the Peace’
in 1847 in Spring Bay. He was appointed Postmaster at Sandspit in 1856 and
elected a member of the first Spring Bay Council in 1860. He apparently
came to Australia with some money but later had trouble paying his debts.
He left about three hundred and seventy seven pounds in his will and the
family silver to his second son Thomas William as his eldest son Stephen
Henry died before him. His wife Elizabeth died in 1891.
